This course teaches new and aspiring journalists and writers how to challenge power and institutions through their work. All journalism is advocacy journalism, but advocacy implicates the journalist in complicated ways. As media analyst Edward Herman writes, professional journalists are constantly making "compromises with authority." We will explore the effects of these compromises, and develop powerful strategies to advocate for equity and social justice.
DESMOND COLE is an award-winning freelance journalist, author, activist and broadcaster. He writes a regular column for the Toronto Star, and hosts a weekly radio program on Newstalk 1010. Desmond is currently working on his first book, a nonfiction exploration of anti-Black racism in Canada.
*Limited seats will be available at a reduced rate of $195 + HST, and in cases of greater financial need, $100 + HST. You can apply for one of these spots under the Fee field on the registration form. Reduced rate registration is not guaranteed.
