A Terrible Country, by Keith Gessen

Andrei is subsisting in Brooklyn as an adjunct professor in Slavic studies when his brother asks him to come to Moscow to care for his grandmother, who has dementia. Recently dumped by his girlfriend, Andrei agrees, and from there Gessen weaves a funny, touching story that also functions as an incisive critique of contemporary Russia, academia, and capitalism. I learned a ton from this, and giggled too.
