2018 GILLER FINALIST
When we imagine time travel, we usually assume the wealthy will be the ones beaming themselves to another space-time. In An Ocean of Minutes, it’s the cash-strapped who disrupt their timeline: Polly, desperate to get medical treatment for her boyfriend, Frank, who has fallen ill from a deadly flu pandemic, trades her future to save him. Things go wrong, and then they get worse, and you start to realize all the parallels between Lim’s story and the real world. Polly basically becomes a migrant to protect the person she loves the most, and the world is not kind to migrants, no matter the timeframe. This is a gorgeous, thoughtful novel that is impossible to stop thinking about.
