Recipes for Survival, by Maria Thereza Alves

Maria Thereza Alves is a Brazilian artist whose work is featured in Grow Op 2019 at the Gladstone. Alves collaborated closely with the people in her village in Brazil to create her powerful photographs that depict the struggle of some of the most exploited people on the planet. Unlike documentation created by outsiders, which tends to objectify Brazil’s indigenous and rural people, Alves’s work presents her subjects as active agents who are critically engaged with history. Recipes for Survival is, in Alves’s words, “about we who are the non-history of Brazil.”
