Summertime, by J. M. Coetzee

Summertime, by J. M. Coetzee is, like Train Dreams, a book by a great author that is probably not as well known as some of his/her other titles. I just assume readers have read Disgrace, Waiting for the Barbarians, Foe, Boyhood, Youth, Age of Iron. Okay, that’s probably assuming a lot. But I somehow suspect that this terrific, devastating book didn’t get enough attention. And yet it is among my favourites. I can think of few writers who are as honest about themselves and the world than Coetzee. The last chapter about his father is particularly powerful. And since this is a Father’s Day list you should read it and weep.”
